Florida Missing Girl Case: Interactive Map

February 13, 2009 · Posted in Commentary

I haven’t lived in North Central Florida in a decade or two, but as my home for nearly half my life I still like to stay on top of what is happening in my hometown, so I am an avid reader of the local newspapers online edition.

For the past week it seems that a young girl has gone missing from her home in the rural town of Satsuma, and the area is being turned upside down in an attempt to find her. The case is quickly becoming a national headline story.

Satsuma is a small town a few miles south of the slightly more major town of Palatka (10k people). I know Palatka becuase it was always a major stopping point for us on our many trips to the beach… but I have never heard of Satsuma until now.

Well it turns out that my local newspaper, the Gainesville Sun, added an interactive map via Google Maps showing some relavant points from the developments including the location of the girls home, the fathers work, the areas where searchers are combing the river and woods.

I can’t understate how impactful that map is in term of helping me relate to the story… seeing that their home was just a few miles south of where we used to always stop for Dairy Queen blizzards puts a totally new dimension and connection to the story that would have been totally missing with just the information that the story was developing in Satsuma, Fl.

This is exactly the sort of stuff that should be in every mainstream domestic and international news story.
